Answer:  An “automat” is a fast food restaurant where basic food and drinks are served by vending machines.

An automat will open in New York City this year

As the world cautiously opens up after the Coronavirus lockdown, steps are being taken at eateries and bars to find new and safe ways to welcome guests.

One such innovative response is a new, zero-human interaction restaurant known as the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop.

This 800 SF restaurant will modernize the automat concept that was popular in the 1950s.

The Brooklyn Dumpling Shop will have an upgraded automat developed by Chicago-based Apex Supply Chain Technologies, along with zero human interaction throughout the entire process.

Some believe the technology now exists to make the automat format a true force in quick service restaurants.

The Brooklyn Dumpling Shop will be a 24-hour, quick service restaurant located in the Lower East Side in New York City. The eatery will house a state-of-the-art dumpling making machine…”The Dumpling Lab” in its front window. This machine will dispense 30,000 dumplings an hour.

The restaurant will also have triple-filter air conditioning and offer antibacterial silicone shoe coverings to guests.

The customer experience

Customers will have to walk through a door equipped with temperature checking technology.

Inside the eatery, instead of being greeted by a server behind a counter, customers will see a 11-feet-high wall of lockers, which will contain orders of dumplings.

Patrons can place their orders via an app on their phones or through contact-free ordering kiosks placed in the restaurant.

The kiosks will be equipped with heat-sensing screens that can detect fingers and credit cards hovering above them and that do not need to be touched.

When their order is ready, the customer will receive a text notification to pick up their order of steaming hot dumplings from a marked, temperature controlled locker.

Patrons can open the locker by scanning their specially created barcode. The locker goes from red…when your order is in, to yellow…which means two minutes out, to green…when you scan your phone on a keypad, the locker opens, and you take your food and go.
